Is this audio-to-text transcriber really free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no account, and no watermark. The transcription runs inside your own browser using an open-source Whisper speech model, so there is no server cost to pass on to you and no usage limit.
Is my audio uploaded anywhere?
No. Your file is decoded and transcribed entirely on your device. The audio never leaves your computer and is never sent to us or any third party. When you close the tab, nothing remains on any server because nothing was ever uploaded.
What audio and video formats are supported?
Common formats including MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, and Opus for audio, and MP4, MOV, WebM and similar for video. The tool extracts the audio track from video files automatically. Exactly which formats decode depends on your browser, but the popular ones all work in Chrome and Edge.
Which languages can it transcribe?
The underlying Whisper model is multilingual and recognises around 100 languages. Leave the language on Auto-detect, or pick one to improve accuracy. You can also translate non-English speech directly into English transcripts.
How accurate is the transcription?
It uses the Whisper "base" model, which is fast and good for clear speech, meetings, interviews, lectures and voice notes. Very noisy recordings, heavy accents or overlapping speakers will lower accuracy — that is true of every transcription tool. For the best results, use a clean recording.
Why does the first transcription take a moment to start?
The first time you run it, your browser downloads the speech model (about 200 MB). After that it is cached locally, so every later transcription starts almost instantly — and works even if you go offline.
What do I need for it to run fast?
A modern browser with WebGPU support (recent Chrome or Edge) runs transcription on your GPU and is dramatically faster. Without WebGPU it falls back to running on the CPU, which still works but is slower. There is nothing to install either way.
How is this different from MeetingMemo?
